Not until the release of the Game Boy Advance has a portable console had the raw horsepower to create a convincing 3-D racer. Unfortunately, the developers behind
Top Gear GT Championship seem to be blissfully unaware of this fact, and their creation really fails to impress.
Top Gear GT Championship is a simulation of the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship, and as such contains all the official cars and drivers--which are totally unknown to anyone outside of Nippon. This is the least of the game's problems, though, because quite frankly it looks and controls like a rather sickly donkey. Although the graphics look good in static screenshots the road effect doesn't have the whizzy "mode 7" 3-D effect that titles such as Konami Krazy Racers and GT Advance use. Instead the road just sort of scrolls towards you out of the ether, very much in the style of old 80s coin-ops.
There are a useful number of ways to customise your vehicle before the race and there are some reasonably impressive weather effects, but unfortunately it's not enough to save things. In short you'd be much better off getting GT Advance, which is much, much, better than this. --David Jenkins
